Quality service and committed employees. How do we do it?

It is important to know whom you are dealing with when you trust your cargo to us. So read on: this is Berkshire Traders, this is how we think, and this is how we move.

Berkshire Traders is a logistics company specializing in the transportation, handling, and storage of minerals. It offers end-to-end supply chain solutions, including the movement of metals, ores, and precious stones, ensuring secure and timely deliveries from mining sites to refineries or markets. The company adheres to strict industry regulations, leveraging specialized equipment to maintain safety and environmental standards.

East Africa’s mineral deposits are known for their high quality and varying purity levels, attracting global interest. For instance, Tanzanian gold is often found with purity levels of 85-90%, while the region’s copper deposits range from 30-50% in ore form, requiring refinement to achieve higher purity standards. Cobalt, primarily mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo and exported through East African ports, has a typical purity of 99.8% after refinement. Gemstones like tanzanite are prized for their deep blue and violet hues, with top-grade stones being almost free of inclusions, making them highly valuable. These purity specifications significantly boost the region’s competitiveness in the global mineral market.

Export Market

These statistics indicate a growing contribution to the global mineral supply chain, with increasing exploration and infrastructure development enhancing the region's role in mineral exports.
  • Gold: Tanzania is the leading gold exporter in East Africa, with an average annual export of around 40-50 tonnes, valued at over $2.5 billion USD. Gold represents the largest share of mineral exports in East Africa.
  • Copper and Cobalt: While copper and cobalt are primarily mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, significant amounts are exported via East African countries such as Tanzania and Kenya. In 2022, the DRC produced around 1.9 million tonnes of copper and over 120,000 tonnes of cobalt, with a large portion of these minerals transported through East African ports.
  • Tanzanite: Tanzania holds the monopoly over tanzanite production, exporting approximately 3-5 million carats annually. The annual export value of tanzanite exceeds $100 million USD, with significant demand in the global gemstone market.
  • Rare Earth Minerals: East Africa also exports rare earth elements, primarily from Burundi and Kenya. The global demand for these materials, essential in electronics and renewable energy technologies, continues to drive exploration and export growth.
  • Niobium and Tin: Rwanda is a leading exporter of niobium and tin in East Africa, exporting over 7,000 tonnes of tin annually, contributing to the global electronics and automotive industries.
